Over ninety years ago the first batch of fried green tomatoes came out of a skillet at the Original WhistleStop Cafe, and a new tradition of down-home cooking was born. The tiny café nestled next to railroad tracks in Irondale, just east of Birmingham, Alabama, was immortalized 50 years later in Fannie Flagg’s book, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. In this book, later made into a movie, Fannie shared childhood memories of warm hospitality and lip-smacking Southern food. For 30 years owners Bill and Mary Jo perfected their recipes over Sunday dinners and thousands of meals with family or friends at the Original WhistleStop Café.
